Course Structure and Format
Our GRE course is structured much like a senior level university classroom course. There are lectures given, interactive use of problems to illustrate ideas, question and answer sessions, content reviews, and student collaboration. Math, data analysis, and statistics are reviewed to promote content mastery. The writing component is reviewed where instructors teach writing to the test and the class works interactively to build top scoring GRE essays. Instructors present a psychology lecture during the first week that provides an understanding of the foundations of the test, fosters student motivation and addresses students’ anxiety and stress. Instructors teach students how to look at problems, how to break them down, which methods, strategies, and techniques to apply, and how to derive the quickest solution. They go through problems step-by-step and show students what to look for and what tools are necessary. Time management is addressed to ensure students’ test day performance is streamlined and efficient. Mastery is facilitated by strategy lectures and question and answer sessions.
Our class meets once per week and covers a specific area of the GRE during each week of class. The course format allows students to spread out the work so that they understand it thoroughly before taking the actual exam. The course is an immersion experience, so students will spend 3 hours in class each week and then between 6 – 7 hours on homework and practice tests. The outside work is an important component to the class and is essential to reaching your potential. While we have a structured syllabus and curriculum, instructors will adapt the course to best reflect student needs and performance.
Instructors are accessible throughout the course and keep an open dialogue with their students. They are available to meet with briefly before or after class and every student has access to their instructor via e-mail. You’ll get to know your instructor with our small class sizes. Instructors are leaders and facilitate peer relationships within the classroom to build camaraderie within the cohort group.

Homework Assignments and Practice Tests
Students are assigned structured homework assignments practice tests. Students learn new topics, strategy, and content in class, solidifying this knowledge through homework assignments, and then integrating this knowledge with a practice test. The completion time of these assignments can vary from student to student, but in general, students should budget about 6 – 7 hours for outside class work in addition to the class time each week. This estimate does not include the time spent studying our vocabulary list. Overall, Xceptional Prep students commit about 9 – 10 hours of time each week to their GRE studies.
Each lesson plan is accompanied by homework that integrates lecture topics and reinforces the strategy and content taught that week. Homework is required each week and gives students practice in the areas that were covered in class. Practicing methods and strategy skills taught in class in a non-timed format is important to timed test day performance. The key is to first understand the content, structure, and plans of attack for each problem in an untimed, stress-free practice format. Then once this knowledge is solidified and integrated students can incorporate it under the constraints of a timed test. After completion of each week’s homework assignments students will have a toolkit of methods and strategies available to apply to problems on their practice tests. Homework reinforces what students have learned, and will also provide instructors an assessment on areas where students need additional help.
Students complete timed practice tests to integrate all of their knowledge and to assess their performance. Structured practice, in the form of a timed practice test, is fundamental to increasing your test score. Instructors collect test information and use it to adapt the class to students’ deficiencies and areas of needed improvement; the first test is used as a pre-test to gauge the initial level of the class.
Homework assignments and practice tests solidify strategy and content into long-term memory so that students will perform to their potential on test day. Completing all homework assignments and practice tests helps students get the most out of the course. Outside class work is an important component to the course, and will help students achieve their personal best score on the GRE exam.

Proctored Tests At Home
Taking real practice tests is the single best way to improve your test score. Students in our courses proctor their tests at home. Our instructors teach proper proctoring procedures and provide students with the necessary tools and information to proctor their tests effectively. Students will need to find a consistent place to take their practice tests free from distraction and in an environment which is similar to the testing center. This allows students to mimic the real world test examination format. While some companies provide proctoring services as an additional component to their courses, this increases course costs as room charges and proctor salaries quickly add up. As the best test prep value, our goal is to reduce student costs.
